Diverticulosis Services in Jefferson City

Understanding Colonic Diverticulosis and What It Means for Your Health

Diverticulosis affects roughly 1 in 3 adults in their 50s and nearly 3 in 4 adults past age 80, making it one of the most common digestive conditions in the United States. Jefferson City Medical Group is Central Missouri's largest independent, physician-owned practice, and our gastroenterology team diagnoses and manages colonic diverticulosis for patients across the region.

Most people with diverticulosis never develop symptoms, but understanding your diagnosis and managing it proactively reduces the risk of complications over time. As a physician-owned practice, we give you direct access to experienced gastroenterologists at cost-effective rates, without the overhead of hospital-owned systems.

How JCMG Evaluates and Manages Colonic Diverticulosis

Diverticula are small pouches formed when the inner lining of your colon pushes outward through the muscular wall. While most patients live with diverticulosis without complications, a small percentage develop issues, and knowing your baseline gives your care team the information needed to act quickly.

Our approach to colonic diverticulosis includes:

  • Colonoscopy to confirm the presence of diverticula and assess how many exist and where they are located along the colon
  • Dietary counseling focused on high-fiber intake to reduce pressure in the colon and support long-term digestive health
  • Hydration and lifestyle guidance to complement dietary changes and keep the colon functioning well
  • Routine monitoring to track your condition over time and adjust your management plan as needed
  • Coordination with JCMG general surgery if a complication such as diverticulitis develops and requires additional intervention

Your care plan starts with an accurate diagnosis and builds toward long-term colon health, with our team available at every stage if your condition changes.

What Causes Diverticulosis and Possible Complications

The precise cause of diverticulosis is not fully understood, but research links it to a long-term low-fiber diet. Insufficient fiber increases pressure in the colon during bowel movements, pushing the inner lining outward through weaker points in the colon wall. Diverticulosis carries no risk of cancer, and for most patients, dietary changes alone keep the condition stable.

Complications develop in a smaller group of patients. Diverticulitis, meaning inflammation or infection of the pouches, affects about 1 in 20 people with diverticular disease. Diverticular bleeding is one of the most common causes of lower GI hemorrhage, but it is usually self-limiting and rarely requires surgery. Contrary to older guidance, foods like popcorn, seeds, and nuts do not trigger diverticulitis attacks and are not foods to avoid.

Signs You Should Schedule a Gastroenterology Appointment

Diverticulosis is often silent, but reaching out before complications develop gives your gastroenterologist the opportunity to establish a baseline and build a management plan around your specific needs. Schedule an evaluation if any of the following apply:

  • Adults over 50 with no prior colon evaluation
  • Mild, recurring cramping or bloating without a clear cause
  • Persistent changes in bowel habits, including constipation or diarrhea
  • Rectal bleeding or blood in your stool
  • A prior diverticulosis diagnosis with no recent follow-up
  • Family history of colon conditions or colorectal cancer

If you experience sudden severe abdominal pain, high fever, or heavy rectal bleeding, seek emergency care immediately, as these symptoms point to a serious complication requiring prompt attention. For routine or ongoing concerns, early consultation with our gastroenterology team leads to better outcomes and more straightforward care.
