Physiatrists are nerve, muscle, and bone experts who treat physical impairments or disabilities affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons. Using specialized diagnostic and non-surgical treatment methods, the physiatrist works to reduce pain, enhance performance, and provide optimal recovery from musculoskeletal and neurological disease. Physiatrists seek to maximize patients’ independence in activities of daily living and improve quality of life.

Patients seen by JCMG physiatrists include those with spinal cord injury, brain injury (traumatic and non-traumatic), stroke, multiple sclerosis, burn care, or musculoskeletal rehabilitation. Inpatient physiatrists often work with health therapists to help patients recover.
