What is an ultrasound?

Ultrasound is an imaging modality that utilizes ultrahigh frequencies to image internal body structures. These soundwaves reflect off body structures and create an echo pattern which is displayed as a real-time visual image. These sounds are emitted and received using a device called a transducer or probe. These images are usually obtained by gently pressing and moving the probe over the skin, with a warm gel that is used to improve the sound wave strength. Occasionally it is necessary to obtain Ultrasound images from inside a body cavity.

What does an ultrasound help diagnose?

Ultrasound can be used on almost any body part and can be used to help diagnose many conditions and diseases.

Most often, ultrasounds are used to:

• Monitor a pregnancy and fetal growth
• Help visualize and assess intra-abdominal or pelvic organs
• Examine a breast lump
• Examine the thyroid gland
• Evaluate blood flow
• Evaluate the heart muscle

How should I prepare for my ultrasound?

Most Ultrasound exams do not require any prep prior to the exam. You may be asked to not eat anything for a period prior to your exam or show up for your exam with a full bladder depending on what we are scanning. Your provider will let you know what is necessary at the time of scheduling your exam. It may be necessary to change into a gown or remove jewelry prior to the exam.

What should I expect during my ultrasound?

For most Ultrasound exams you will be either laying down or seated in a chair for the exam. The technologist will apply a gel to the area being examined. This gel eliminates air between the skin and the probe allowing stronger sound waves to be transmitted and received. The technologist will use the probe over the area to be scanned to create the images. They may ask you to hold your breath as they capture the images. It may be necessary for the technologist to ask you to switch positions throughout the exam, depending on the area being scanned.

In most cases you will be able to resume your normal activities immediately after the exam. Your provider will receive a report and discuss the results with you.
