After massive weight loss, an unfortunate pocket of fat routinely develops at the junction of the upper thigh and the groin crease. This extra skin and fat causes chafing. The shape of the thigh and texture of the skin are unsightly. The traditional thighplasty is a long up and down incision like that of the brachiaplasty. In our practice, we use a horizontal wedge excision almost exclusively. This hides the incision much higher, leads to a better thigh shape, has a faster recovery, and lower risk of complications.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons considers this a cosmetic procedure, and it is not covered by insurance.
