Self-care Tips: A Therapist’s Perspective

In today’s fast-paced world, life can often feel like an endless juggling act. The mental load, constant multitasking, and pressure to meet expectations can leave even the most resilient individuals feeling drained. Stephanie, a licensed mental health therapist at JCMG Center for Well-Being, understands this struggle firsthand.

She knows what it’s like to feel as though life is moving too fast, with little time to catch your breath. But over the years, she’s developed a few simple, yet powerful, habits that help her stay grounded. These are strategies she practices herself and recommends to her clients.

START THE DAY WITH INTENTION

Stephanie emphasizes the importance of taking your time getting ready each morning, not just for the sake of routine, but also to boost your self-esteem. “Taking care of yourself means loving yourself,” she says. “When you feel confident and comfortable in your own skin, you’re better equipped to handle the day’s challenges.” A few extra minutes in the morning to prepare can set a positive tone for the entire day.

NOURISH YOUR BODY TO FUEL YOUR MIND

Proper nutrition and hydration are essential for mental clarity and energy. Stephanie aims to drink a gallon of water a day and eat balanced meals from all food groups. While making these changes wasn’t easy at first, she realized that her ability to care for her family depended on her own well-being. “When I started prioritizing my health, everything else became more manageable,” she shares.

STAY CONNECTED TO YOUR SUPPORT SYSTEM

Human connection is a vital part of emotional health. Stephanie makes it a point to schedule a night with friends once a month and plan family dinners out regularly. These moments of connection help her feel seen, supported, and recharged. “You deserve to be surrounded by people who love and uplift you,” she reminds other parents.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP

Despite all the self-care in the world, there are times when additional support is needed. Stephanie encourages anyone who is struggling to reach out, whether to a trusted friend or a licensed therapist. “You don’t have to do it all alone,” she says. “You deserve to feel your best.”
