Mammography 101: What Every Woman Should Know About Breast Cancer Screening

When it comes to breast health, early detection saves lives, and mammograms are one of the most powerful tools we have. JCMG’s Mammography team has answered some of the most frequently asked questions about mammograms and why they’re so important.

As JCMG’s Mammography Lead Tech, Lori Caton, explains, “We try to make mammograms as quick and painless as possible, while still achieving our goal of getting the best images possible.”

Every person is different, and so is every mammogram. But while individual experiences may vary, the description below outlines what most patients can expect during a routine screening, and why every screening is important.

Why Mammograms Matter

Mammograms can detect abnormalities in breast tissue months or even years before a lump can be felt. That means cancers can be caught earlier, when they’re most treatable. It’s not just about peace of mind; it’s about saving lives through early detection.

When Should You Start Getting Mammograms?

Women should begin annual screening mammograms at age 40. In some cases, screenings may need to start earlier, especially if you have a family history of breast cancer or other specific risk factors. For those at higher risk, screening breast MRIs may also be recommended in addition to mammograms.

If you are unsure when to begin screenings, talk to your primary care or women’s health provider. They will help you determine the best plan based on your personal and family health history.

What to Expect During Your Mammogram

When you arrive for your appointment, a technologist will walk you through each step. You will be positioned in front of a specialized imaging system designed to take detailed images of your breast tissue. To get the clearest images, compression is applied for just a few seconds while each view is captured.

The exam typically takes 10–20 minutes, and in many cases, results are available shortly after. If anything unusual shows up, your provider may recommend additional imaging or follow-up tests.

Advanced Technology at JCMG

For over 11 years, JCMG has offered state-of-the-art 3D mammography, also known as tomosynthesis, to provide the most accurate breast cancer screening available. Unlike traditional 2D mammograms that capture a single flat image, 3D mammography creates a series of layered, high-resolution images. This allows radiologists to examine breast tissue one layer at a time, making it easier to detect even the most subtle changes.

This advanced technology enhances cancer detection rates and reduces false positives, resulting in fewer unnecessary callbacks and less anxiety for patients. At JCMG, our goal is to make your visit as smooth and comfortable as possible while delivering the most precise results.
