Is Immunotherapy Right for You?

WHAT TO EXPECT WITH ALLERY SHOTS

Have you found yourself struggling with allergies? Are you ready for more than just short-term relief? Allergy shots may be the solution you’re looking for!

I am Dr. Mark LaShell, a Board-Certified Allergist and Immunologist. My team and I provide over 25 years of physician experience through the JCMG Allergy/Immunology program.  I have guided many patients through this process, and my team and I understand that starting allergy shots (also known as immunotherapy) can feel like a significant step. We offer support from the beginning to ease doubts and bring you deserved relief from allergies.

Together, we will walk through what the journey looks like, so you will know exactly what to expect!

THE STEPS OF YOUR IMMUNOTHERAPY JOURNEY

1. Evaluation and Testing

Your journey begins with a thorough evaluation and allergy testing by the JCMG Allergy and Immunology team. This includes a detailed review of your symptoms and history. Together, we’ll determine whether you’re a good candidate for immunotherapy, giving us the clearest picture of your allergies and ensuring that allergy shots are recommended only when they’re truly the best option for you.

2. Discussing Your Options

If immunotherapy is recommended, we’ll explain how allergy shots work and what to expect. This is your opportunity to ask questions and decide if this treatment path feels right for you.

3. Consent and Education

Once you decide to move forward, our registered nurse (RN) will walk you through the formal consent process and review our Immunotherapy Handbook—a helpful resource outlining treatment schedules, safety tips, and more.

4. Insurance Coordination

Our insurance specialist will contact your insurance provider to verify coverage, obtain any necessary authorizations, and clarify your benefits.

5. Scheduling and Payment

Once coverage is confirmed, we’ll schedule your first appointments and review payment options. We’ll make sure everything is clear before you begin. Steps 1 through 5 will take place during your initial visit. If you need time to consider this course of treatment before moving forward, or if insurance is still pending, we’ll work with you to keep things moving smoothly.

6. Vial Preparation

After scheduling, our RN team will begin preparing your personalized allergy serum. This process typically takes up to two weeks, and your vials will be ready in time for your first immunotherapy appointment.

7. Starting Immunotherapy

When you arrive for your first allergy shot, your treatment begins. Our team will always be there to ensure your safety and comfort—especially during the early stages. From there, you’ll follow a regular schedule designed to build your tolerance to allergens gradually.
